Stablecoin: meaning, example and why it matters

A crypto token designed to keep a steady value, usually against the US dollar. How well it holds its peg depends on its reserves and design; some have lost it.

Worked example

A token meant to be worth $1 that trades at $0.98 has lost 2% of its peg, so a $10,000 holding is worth $9,800.

Why it matters

Stablecoins are used as a cash-like unit in crypto, but how well one holds its value depends on its reserves and design.
