NSE: meaning, example and why it matters

National Stock Exchange of India, one of the country's two main stock exchanges. Its benchmark index is the Nifty 50.

Worked example

If every one of the 50 Nifty stocks had equal weight, a 1% move in one would move the index by 1% ÷ 50 = 0.02%. In practice weights differ, so larger companies move it more.
