Nifty 50: meaning, example and why it matters

NSE's benchmark index of 50 large companies listed on the National Stock Exchange. It is a weighted summary, so individual stocks can move differently from the index.

Worked example

If the Nifty 50 moves from 24,000 to 24,240 it has risen 240 points, or 1%. On that day one member can rise 5% while another falls, because the index is a weighted summary.

Why it matters

The Nifty 50 is the most quoted summary of large Indian companies, and many funds and ETFs track it.
