How the stcg ltcg tax calculator (equity) works
The calculator first finds the gain (sale value minus purchase value minus costs) and then applies the rule for how long the shares were held:
- Held for 12 months or less: short-term gain, taxed at 20%.
- Held for more than 12 months: long-term gain. The first ₹1,25,000 of long-term equity gains in a financial year is exempt and the rest is taxed at 12.5%. If you have already booked other long-term gains this year, enter them so the exemption is not counted twice.
- Cess: a percentage of the tax, 4% by default. Surcharge, which depends on total income, is not included.
Listed equity shares and equity-oriented mutual funds where securities transaction tax (STT) has been paid. Rates unchanged by Union Budget 2026; surcharge and 4% health and education cess may apply on top. A loss shows no tax here; how losses are set off against other gains is not modelled.
Worked example
A holding bought for ₹1,00,000 and sold for ₹2,50,000 after 14 months has a gain of ₹1,50,000, which is long-term. After the ₹1,25,000 exemption the taxable amount is ₹25,000. At 12.5% the tax is ₹3,125.00, plus ₹125.00 of cess, a total of ₹3,250.00, leaving a gain of ₹1,46,750.00 after tax.
