OHLC: meaning, example and why it matters

Open, high, low and close: the four prices that summarise a trading period such as a day.

Worked example

A day with open ₹250, high ₹262, low ₹247 and close ₹259 has OHLC of 250 / 262 / 247 / 259. The day's range is 262 − 247 = ₹15 and close minus open is +₹9.

Why it matters

Four numbers are enough to draw a candlestick and to compute range and open-to-close change.
