Halving: meaning, example and why it matters

A scheduled event in Bitcoin's protocol roughly every four years that cuts in half the reward paid for adding new blocks, slowing the rate at which new coins are created. It does not guarantee any price outcome.

Worked example

If the reward is 6.25 coins per block, a halving cuts it to 3.125. New supply from blocks falls by half from that point.

Why it matters

It slows the rate at which new coins are created, and it is part of why Bitcoin's supply is capped.
