Exit load: meaning, example and why it matters

A fee some mutual funds charge if you redeem units within a stated period. The period and percentage are in the scheme's documents.

Worked example

If a fund has a 1% exit load for redemptions within one year, redeeming units worth ₹50,000 after 6 months costs ₹500, while redeeming after 13 months costs nothing.

Why it matters

It is a cost that applies only when you leave early, so the holding period in the scheme document matters before you invest.
