Blockchain: meaning, example and why it matters

A shared ledger of transactions kept in sync by many computers, so no single party controls the record. Different blockchains have different rules, speeds and security.

Worked example

If 1,000 computers each hold a copy of a ledger and one copy is altered, it no longer matches the other 999, so the change is rejected.

Illustrative numbers for explanation only. They are not market data, a forecast or a suggestion.

Why it matters

The shared record is what lets strangers agree on who owns what without a central company.
