Change of Character (CHoCH): the first break against the trend

हिंदी में पढ़ें

A Change of Character, or CHoCH, is the first structural break against the prevailing trend. In an uptrend it is a close below the last higher low; in a downtrend it is a close above the last lower high.

What it is

A CHoCH is read as an early warning that the old trend may be weakening. It is not a confirmed reversal. Price can break the level and still return to the old trend.

The tell-tale pattern is usually: the trend fails to make a new extreme (a lower high in an uptrend), and then the last protected low gives way.

How to spot it

  1. Identify the trend through its swings (for example HH and HL).
  2. Mark the last higher low (uptrend) or last lower high (downtrend). SMC calls this the protected swing.
  3. Watch whether price fails to make a new extreme before breaking that level.
  4. Mark a CHoCH only when a candle closes beyond the protected swing on your timeframe.

Worked example (illustrative)

Illustrative example: price makes a higher high at 115, then only reaches 113 (lower high), and then a candle closes at 102.5, below the last higher low of 104. That sequence is a bearish CHoCH. It signals that the up-structure was broken, not that price must keep falling.

Frequently asked questions

What does CHoCH mean?

CHoCH stands for Change of Character: the first break of structure in the direction opposite to the existing trend.

Is CHoCH the same as a trend reversal?

No. It is an early sign that the trend may be changing. Reversals are confirmed by what price does afterwards, and many CHoCH events fail.

How is CHoCH different from BOS?

BOS is a break in the direction of the trend (continuation). CHoCH is the first break against it.
